Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 (called REACH, the acronym for Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of chemical substances and mixtures) came into effect on June 1, 2007
This regulation of the European Union, has as its purpose the regulation of chemical substances, seeking to protect both human health and the environment.
It also encourages the use and development of alternative methods for the study of substances, thus reducing animal testing.
The companies must identify and manage the possible risks of the chemical substances that they commercialize, both the companies that carry out industrial processes and the companies that make products for our daily use, such as clothes, electronics, cleaning products, among others.
It must be demonstrated to the ECHA (European Chemical Agency) that the substances used are safe and inform how they should be used and what measures should be taken to manage the risk they may cause.
In the event that the company fails to demonstrate how to manage a chemical substance, the authorities may prohibit, restrict, and/or limit the use of substances considered to be more dangerous, and may even condition the use of the substance upon prior authorization.
Depending on the type of company and the sector in which activity is carried out, specific obligations must be met.
